  1. Wow, you want the science class answer or the truth? Think about it, the moon pulls the water away from the earth (and the earth away from the water on the opposite side. Orbiting over the equator, the moons pulls straight up there and the moon is closest to the earths surface at the equator - the pull is decreased by both angle and distance as you approach the poles until, at the pole the moon is pulling sideways, not up. It would seem like the tide would be biggest at the equator and pretty much non-existent at the poles. Now, look at this chart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:M2_tidal_constituent.jpg as referenced by this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tide Now, the M2 chart isn't exactly a chart of tidal amplitude, but it's close enough - do you see a pattern to this that's related to latitude? I don't.
